Nurses Week is a yearly celebration beginning on May 6th and ending on May 12th that honors the nursing profession. Advantage Medical Professionals celebrates each day of Nurses Week by turning the spotlight on one of our very own healthcare heroes! Read on to learn more about our Assistant Director of Nursing, Rachel Ferguson, BSN, RN.
What would you say to someone pursuing a career in nursing?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether you are having a hard time in nursing school because care plans are just so complicated, or you’re having the hardest day on the floor and can’t seem to catch up with your charting. Don’t be afraid to ask, and don’t be afraid to offer either. We are all on this same crazy ride together!
Who has been your biggest inspiration within the nursing profession?
Honestly, my biggest inspiration is my daughter. I realize she is not in the nursing profession, but I became pregnant with her during my first year as a nurse. She has been the reason I keep going and keep pushing every single day for all I do, and I always will.
How did your nursing career path eventually lead you to join us at Advantage as our Assistant Director of Nursing?
As a nurse, I think a lot of times you can feel as though you just aren’t seen or heard. And as agency nurses, we tend to feel that burden a little more because we’re the “outsiders”. Having been an agency nurse before myself, I thought this was an interesting opportunity to make sure that these nurses feel as though they have someone on their side that they could relate to.
In your opinion, what is the biggest difference(s) between bedside nursing and being in a nursing management/support role?
Going from the bedside to the nursing management/support role has been a fun learning experience and the responsibility level is quite different. I learn something new every day and I love being able to be available for the nurses and helping the team when I can.
What’s a fun fact about you that people may not know?
I just danced in my first recital ever at 35 years old. It was the most fun and terrifying thing I’ve ever done in my life.
